Yesterday, Bacardi held a roll-out event for its new Pineapple Fusion expression, which combines the flavors of pineapple and coconut in light rum, at the iconic/infamous Hollywood Roosevelt pool.

Note DJ on top of the portico. Def. Also, respect to the burgers and dogs.

As much as I'm inclined to dismiss any pre-flavored spirit (especially one easily synthesized with fresh ingredient at a typical bar), I can see how this could be useful in certain situations where maybe you don't have a lot of refrigeration. like a beach bar, boat deck, or afterprom field party.

Looks like a Piña Colada, doesn't it? That's because...

The event was supposedly USBG-connected, which implied there would be some top local bartenders on hand doing interesting things, and a lot of industry folks on the scene. There were a few of the latter (was that really Kate Grutman in a bikini?) and very little of the former, but considering it came right on the tail end of the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, where anyone-who-was-anyone had decamped over the weekend, I shouldn't have expected too much.

I know what you're thinking: that's a lot of ingredients. Could you taste them all? Well, not the ginger, apricot or lemon. Other than that, it was perfect.

Instead, the event was stuffed with wild bikinis, to turn a phrase, of an uncertain distinction, most of whom seemed enthusiastic about the lime-fusion "shot" syringes handed out at the door, if not the FOUR free drink tickets for each freeloader brand supporter.

I'm not sure why this one was named in tribute to Pasadena City College. But I couldn't help thinking it would be improved by some of the apricot completely wasted in the Colada...

The crowd got even more interesting as the event built, and I have to admit some sorrow at having to leave before it was time to kick everyone out  wrap things up. But mostly, it gave me newfound respect for similar pool parties in Las Vegas. Oh, Vegas, how I have over-harshed you! And speaking of Vegas, Bacardi, next time, please send your brand ambassador Mariena Mercer. I'm sure she's got a few more tricks for showing your product's versatility.

Since they were, I guess, tapped out of ideas after four Fusion cocktails (including the syringes), they also offered new Dewar's Highland Honey...drowned under a pint of iced tea, making it basically undetectable.
